Living With Wolves
Howls ripple across the hillside as I pass beneath the arms of scrubby pinyons and wind-worn junipers. The wolves track me from both sides, fluorescent eyes peering through the dark. Though I know they are behind fences, my heart still races at their stalking silhouettes, claws clicking, fur shifting, guard hairs long and bristling. To my left, Teton and Shasta, young Arctics, rush toward me and stop with predatorial precision before barreling into the chain link that lines their half-acre enclosure. Their gaze follows me for the length of their habitat until Rain and Nimoy pick up the chase, then Oscar and Gaia, and Zeus, and Luna, until I’ve reached the edge of Nakota and Lani’s pen where the fence line ends and the compound opens onto a field of wildflowers and sun-bleached bones. On clear nights like this my flashlight stays off, tucked into my pants pocket, forcing my senses to hear, feel, smell, see a fraction of what the animals do without effort.
